Global Campaign Will Promote Benefits Of Ditching Dairy
Millions of people around the world are ditching dairy, and opting instead for healthy, delicious drinks made entirely from plants. There are so many reasons to do this…
Since 2017, August 22 has been an important date in the calendar, because it marks World Plant Milk Day (WPMD).
This exciting initiative was conceived by Robbie Lockie – vegan advocate, campaigner, and Co-founder of media organization Plant Based News – and run in collaboration with international food awareness organization ProVeg.
Lockie saw the dairy industry celebrating World Milk Day, and felt it was time to have a day to highlight the incredible benefits of plant milk.
Ditch the dairy
Millions of people around the world are ditching dairy, and opting instead for healthy, delicious drinks made entirely from plants. There are so many reasons to do this – including saving the planet, improving your health, and helping stop the exploitation of cows in the dairy industry.
Avoiding dairy is one of the most significant steps an individual can take in reducing their impact on the planet. Dairy herds are responsible for dangerous greenhouse gas emissions which exceed their plant-based counterparts. In addition, producing milk is resource-heavy, requiring large amounts of land and water.
Health
When it comes to human health, multiple studies have linked dairy consumption has to health problems including diarrhea, muscle and joint pain, headaches, lethargy, acne, and even depression among others.
And looking at the health of dairy cows, the news is no better. Many people don’t realize that dairy is a slaughter industry. Cows are forcibly impregnated, then separated from their calves so humans can take their milk. This is traumatic for both mother and baby. Many male calves are killed within 24 hours of birth – around 95,000 each year – with others reared for veal or beef.
Make it easy
These reasons – among others – are just some of the factors motivating sop many people to choose alternatives.
Because of this, food producers, retailers, and restaurants are making it easier than ever to phase out dairy, offering delicious plant-based alternatives to traditional products, including milk, ice-cream, and cheese.
Challenge
World Plant Milk Day makes it even easier to ditch dairy, with its 7-Day Dairy-Free Challenge. Just as it sounds, it is a week-long initiative which will help you get started on your exciting dairy-free journey.
